Humphrey Lyttelton, trumpeter (and clarinettist), bandleader, author, cartoonist and chairman of the BBC Radio series: "I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue" - which has run for 30 years - this year celebrates his fiftieth continuous year as a leader of one of the best known jazz bands in Britain. The Lyons C Clarinet is frequently played by members of his band. In 1993 he recorded his composition 'C-Lyons Siesta' with three Lyons C Clarinets played by the two sax/clarinetists in his band and himself.
"It feels lovely - like a pipe. But the sound, that's the amazing thing. When you look at this and see its made of plastic and so on it's hard to imagine it actually produces an absolutely superb clarinet sound."
.......................
A little-known fact: In 1938, Humphrey Lyttelton was one of a party of Eton schoolboys taken to Croydon aerodrome to welcome Neville Chamberlain on his return from Germany. It was there Chamberlain gave his (in)famous 'Peace in our time' speech after negotiating with Hitler in Munich. |
